A closer look
The concept of hyping up a book simply because other people bought it is older than you think. The word 'bestseller' was first printed in a Kansas newspaper in 1889 to describe popular literature. Instead of judging a book by its actual literary merit, the industry realized they could just brag about sales numbers to trigger herd mentality. Thus, the infinite loop of buying trash because everyone else is buying trash was officially born.
