Long before it became the standard symbol of bridal purity, wearing white to your wedding was basically screaming for a funeral. In 1558, Mary unapologetically wore a white gown to marry the Dauphin of France simply because it was her favorite color. The French court was utterly scandalized by her morbid fashion choice, though given how terribly her life ended, she was arguably just dressing ahead of schedule.
