A closer look

The hollow tip of a foam dart isn't there strictly to prevent eye injuries; it is an aerodynamic necessity. A solid foam cylinder is incredibly unstable in flight and will immediately tumble out of the air. By hollowing out the tip, the center of mass is shifted radically forward, while the hollow cavity catches oncoming air resistance to stabilize the rear, allowing you to accurately hit your friends across the living room.
