A closer look
The Roland TR-808 was a massive commercial flop when it dropped in 1980 because it sounded absolutely nothing like a real drum kit. The iconic, earth-shattering bass kick and the tinny, robotic cowbell were basically just mathematically incorrect analog synth circuits pushed to their weirdest limits. Naturally, broke underground producers bought these rejected machines from pawn shops, realizing that 'fake' drums actually hit way harder in a club. Entire genres of music exist purely because Roland engineers spectacularly failed at mimicking acoustic cymbals.
