A closer look
Being a noble knight sounds romantic until you realize you were essentially a walking iron coffin. Early medieval armor could weigh upward of 50-60 pounds, and its weight distribution was abysmal. If a fully armored knight was knocked off his horse in a rain-soaked battlefield like Agincourt, the mud acted like quicksand. Hundreds of elite, expensively trained warriors died completely unglamorous deaths by simply face-planting into a puddle and being too top-heavy to roll over and breathe.
