Almost every single clock visible in the background of Quentin Tarantino's legendary 1994 film Pulp Fiction is famously set to exactly 4:20, a deliberate visual easter egg scattered throughout the wildly non-linear storyline. While casual viewers might assume this is a deeply profound commentary on the passage of time or the chaotic nature of the criminal underworld, it is literally just a massive inside joke heavily referencing marijuana culture. Tarantino has never explicitly confirmed why he did it, but considering the heavy drug themes of the movie and the general vibe of the independent film scene, the true motive is painfully obvious. Finding subtle cinematic brilliance in a movie is fun, but it is equally hilarious to realize that one of the most revered auteurs of our generation just spent his prop budget making an endless series of extremely elaborate weed jokes
