A closer look

Hot air balloons possess absolutely no directional steering mechanisms, making them the only form of human transport where the pilot essentially surrenders completely to the chaotic whims of the wind. The operator can only control the vertical altitude by blasting a terrifyingly loud propane flamethrower into the canopy to go up, or letting the hot air bleed out to descend. Navigating relies entirely on finding different atmospheric wind currents at varying altitudes and just hoping one of them is blowing in a relatively safe direction. People pay hundreds of dollars to romantically float in a fragile wicker picnic basket suspended under a giant bag of hot gas, trusting their lives to a pilot who cannot actually steer and has to aggressively negotiate an impromptu landing in some angry farmer's random cornfield
