What astrologers look for in the seventh house

In a birth chart, the seventh house begins at the Descendant, the point directly opposite the Ascendant, which marks the eastern horizon at birth. Astrologers associate this part of the chart with committed partnerships, marriage, agreements, and conflicts with identifiable opponents. Because it describes how someone meets and engages with other people, it is often used to discuss the qualities a person may seek—or encounter—in a spouse.

The house is not usually read as a stand-alone portrait. An astrologer may consider the zodiac sign on its starting edge, any planets placed inside it, and the planet that rules that sign. Those details are combined with the rest of the chart to build an interpretation of relationship patterns and partner traits.

Why “future ex-spouse” is an interpretation, not a name

Astrological readings may use the seventh house to speculate about a future partner, including tensions that could affect a relationship. But the chart does not supply an ex-spouse’s identity or a literal account of a breakup. The “future ex-spouse” framing turns a broad symbolic reading about partnership into a pointed prediction; astrologers’ specific interpretations can vary.

That distinction is part of how the house works in practice: it offers a vocabulary for thinking about what someone brings to close relationships and what they expect from others. A reading might suggest a tendency toward particular kinds of partners or recurring challenges, rather than identify one inevitable person or outcome.
