Why rare earth elements aren't actually rare

The elements crucial for modern hardware are incredibly abundant in the earth's crust. They are only called 'rare' because extracting them requires boiling hundreds of tons of rock in highly corrosive acids, a process heavily outsourced to countries with loose environmental laws.
