A closer look
Most esoteric traditions involve complex fasting rituals, but the 18th century's most prolific mystic basically ate like a modern toddler. Emanuel Swedenborg claimed he regularly conversed with angels, demons, and dead kings, documenting massive volumes of deep spiritual architecture. To maintain his mystical purity, he adopted a hyper-strict diet consisting almost entirely of bread, massive quantities of milk, and endless cups of heavily sweetened coffee. It's truly a miracle he achieved spiritual enlightenment instead of just extreme lactose-induced heartburn.
