Feeding massive data too slowly to a high-speed tape drive aggressively causes the tape to physically saw itself in half. If a system can't provide data fast enough, a tape drive must constantly stop, rewind, and heavily restart to catch up. This violent motion heavily grinds the delicate film against the read heads.
