You’d naturally assume the origins of computer animation involved artists, but in the Soviet Union, it required hardcore ballistic mathematicians. Mstislav Keldysh’s institute used massive, room-sized mainframe computers to meticulously map out fluid dynamics and aerodynamics. They repurposed these intense mathematical equations to animate a simple walking cat, proving rocket science could easily be downgraded to make primitive Saturday morning cartoons.
