A closer look
When scientists first discovered a massive hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica in the 1980s, NASA was incredibly late to the panic party. Why? Because their satellites had actually been recording the catastrophic drop in ozone for years, but the automated data processing software was programmed to flag measurements that low as obvious machine errors. The computers essentially thought, 'The sky can't possibly be falling this fast,' and quietly deleted the data while our protective radiation shield dissolved.
