In indigenous Siberian belief systems, you couldn't just apply to shaman school; the spirits had to violently recruit you. If a person was struck by lightning and miraculously survived, it was considered undeniable proof that the sky gods had chosen them as a mystical conduit. Even their charred remains, if they didn't survive, were treated with extreme reverence. It's an incredibly hardcore HR policy that effectively filters out the casual applicants.
