Fariduddin Attar wrote an epic poem about a fake bird king

Avian metaphors can get really out of hand if you are not careful. Attar wrote 'The Conference of the Birds,' a massive epic where thousands of birds cross seven terrifying valleys to find their legendary king, the Simurgh. When the thirty surviving birds finally arrive, they just look into a lake and realize 'Simurgh' literally translates to 'thirty birds' in Persian.
