A closer look
Dust particles floating through the air in the terrifying Upside Down dimension of Stranger Things are mostly just massive clouds of dandelion seeds that the production team blew onto the set. The ominous, decaying parallel universe where horrific monsters hunt terrified teenagers was visually established by utilizing the exact same fluffy weeds that ruin perfectly manicured suburban lawns every spring. When the visual effects artists were trying to make the atmosphere look toxic, oppressive, and otherworldly, they realized that nothing quite says creeping existential dread like airborne seasonal allergens. It is hilarious to watch the brave characters of Hawkins fighting for their lives against supernatural demons while violently inhaling enough pollen to require a lifetime prescription of heavy antihistamines
