The legend behind Montauk
Before Stranger Things became a story about Hawkins, Indiana, the Duffer brothers developed it under the title Montauk. The name pointed to Montauk, a town at the eastern tip of Long Island, and to conspiracy theories about the so-called Montauk Project: claims that secret experiments took place at the former military site Camp Hero.
Those stories often involve mind control and paranormal research. They are conspiracy claims, not established accounts of real experiments. For the Duffers, however, they offered a potent premise for fiction: a hidden government operation could sit just beyond the edge of ordinary life, with strange events leaking into a nearby community.
From a real place to a fictional town
The finished series moved the story to Hawkins, a fictional town in Indiana. That change preserved the contrast at the heart of the premise—a seemingly familiar community shadowed by a secret laboratory—without tying the story to Montauk itself. It also gave the creators room to shape the town around the characters and plot rather than the geography of a real location.
The original title therefore points to an early source of the show’s atmosphere, not its final setting. Montauk supplied a conspiracy-laden starting point; Hawkins became the invented place where the Duffers could make that unease part of everyday small-town life.
