Long before Elvira dominated pop culture, Maila Nurmi was pioneering a terrifyingly fresh TV genre on local Los Angeles station KABC-TV in 1954. Broadcasting in a haunted hallway set with deep shadows and morbid puns, she transformed cheap, syndicated B-movies into appointment television for insomniacs.
