The kings of the 1980s Cabbage Patch Kids craze started out making shoe leather. Coleco was literally an acronym for Connecticut Leather Company, supplying materials to shoe repair shops. As leather demand tanked, they pivoted to plastic wading pools, then video game consoles, and finally to creepy adoptable dolls in an epic spree of corporate identity crises.
