A closer look

Stories passed around campfires often carried hidden warnings. One tells of a traveler bold enough to laugh at the spirits said to guard wandering paths. He mocked their offerings, kicked over shrines, and boasted loudly that nothing unseen could stop him. But come sunset, something eerie happened—his body walked onward, while his shadow remained behind, flat and unyielding on the road. Without it, he weakened with every step, as though his very root was severed. What became of him remains untold, but the moral lingered: tread with respect, or leave pieces of yourself scattered behind.
