Early microphones turned carbon granules into sound
If you think today's audio quality is rough, try speaking into literal charcoal. Early carbon microphones relied on loosely packed carbon granules pressed between two metal plates; when sound waves hit the plate, it squished the carbon, wildly changing the electrical resistance. It crackled endlessly and sounded entirely like you were broadcasting from inside a bag of stale potato chips.
