Early hearing aids were giant brass ear trumpets

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

If you were hard of hearing in the 18th century, your best technological option was strapping a massive brass tuba to your skull. Ear trumpets didn't amplify sound electronically; they simply funneled massive amounts of acoustic waves straight into your ear canal. They were terribly ineffective, constantly required you to aim your head at the speaker like a radar dish, and looked absolutely ridiculous.
