A closer look
One of the most dazzling blues in nature is a complete optical illusion. The magnificent wings of the Morpho butterfly do not contain a single drop of blue pigment. Instead, their wing cuticles are covered in millions of microscopic, tree-like nanostructures called photonic crystals. These incredibly precise physical ridges are perfectly spaced to cancel out red and yellow light wavelengths through destructive interference, while simultaneously amplifying blue wavelengths.
