Movie sound used to be printed beside the frames

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Before digital surround formats, the audio for a theater movie was literally printed as a picture right next to the frames. A physical, squiggly line ran down the edge of the celluloid; the projector shined a light through this transparent wave onto a photoelectric cell, translating the shapes directly back into sound.
