Japanese traffic lights use blue instead of green to signal 'go' because historically the language used the same word, 'ao', for both colors, and when international laws dictated green for 'go', Japan compromised by using the greenest shade of blue possible to remain linguistically accurate without entirely violating global standards; so while the rest of the world just accepts standard traffic engineering, an entire nation is out there bending the light spectrum just to avoid admitting their ancestors needed a better thesaurus, leaving bewildered tourists wondering if they need an optometrist or a new driving instructor
