Before it became the ruthless global dictator of women's fashion, it was just a gossip rag for rich dudes. Launched in 1892, it targeted elite New York men who wanted to know about high-society social events and athletic club news. It wasn't until Condé Nast bought it in 1909 that it transformed into the glamorous empire we know today.
