A closer look
Owning a kayak historically required possessing a roof rack, a garage, and a lot of upper body strength to wrestle a cumbersome plastic log. Oru Kayak looked at this and decided rigid boats were obsolete. By deeply studying the structural geometry of origami, they created a fully functional, highly buoyant kayak manufactured from a single, seamless sheet of custom-extruded, double-layered corrugated plastic. Through a series of brilliant permanent creases, the entire 12-foot vessel collapses inward upon itself, transforming from a sleek watercraft into a surprisingly compact, 20-pound box you can toss into the trunk of a sedan. It's brilliant engineering that relies on material memory rather than a mess of inflatable tubes.
