Translating comedy is a structural nightmare, so the legendary voice actor for the Latin American dub of The Simpsons simply went rogue. Rather than trying to explain obscure American pop culture references to a foreign audience, Velez ad-libbed local slang, invented new catchphrases, and mercilessly roasted regional Latin politicians. His localized improvisation made Homer arguably more beloved in Spanish-speaking countries than he is in his native tongue.
