How the Magic 8 Ball settles on an answer
Inside the black shell is a hollow chamber filled with dark blue liquid and a many-sided die. The liquid conceals the die from view while letting it move when the ball is shaken. What looks like a mysterious fluid is doing a practical job: it gives the die room to tumble and helps make the answer appear only after the motion stops.
A shake turns chance into a visible face
The die has 20 sides, each marked with an answer. Shaking scrambles its position; when the ball is turned toward its small viewing window, the die drifts and settles with one face against the window. The answer on that face becomes readable through the liquid.
So the ball does not interpret a question or choose a response based on its wording. The shake supplies a randomizing motion, and the die supplies a fixed set of possible replies. The dark liquid hides the mechanism between turns, preserving the illusion that an answer has emerged from somewhere inside the ball.
That simple arrangement is the trick’s charm: a hidden die makes a chance result feel like a deliberate verdict.
