Steven Spielberg single-handedly caused the creation of the PG-13 movie rating after traumatizing an entire generation of children with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Parents in 1984 dragged their kids to the theater expecting a fun adventure, only to watch a man get his still-beating heart ripped out of his chest in fiery sacrificial glory. Since the movie was too violent for a PG rating but not quite pornographic enough for an R, Spielberg suggested to the MPAA president that they invent a middle ground. Thus, the PG-13 rating was born, revolutionizing Hollywood's ability to market sanitized violence and gratuitous explosions to teenagers while completely shielding them from the horrifying sight of an unprotected human nipple
