Lord Kelvin figured out a way to conjure high-voltage lightning using nothing but falling water and a few tin cans. The Kelvin water dropper exploits the tiny, random charge imbalances present in ordinary water. As water drips through conductive rings into buckets, positive and negative charges are physically separated by electrostatic induction. The resulting feedback loop relentlessly amplifies the charge until the voltage difference between the two buckets reaches upward of 10,000 volts, eventually discharging in a brilliant, snapping spark.
