Retrograde planetary motion was so confusing to ancient Greeks they invented literal crystal spheres to explain it

Instead of admitting their geocentric model of the universe was flawed, Greek philosophers created an absurdly complicated mechanical nightmare. Because planets appear to loop backwards in the sky, Ptolemy and friends theorized that planets rode on invisible, interlocking crystal wheels called epicycles. They essentially invented space gears rather than accept that the Earth was just moving.
