Keeping spatial awareness is hard, so UI designers compress the horizon into a single spinning strip. Compass bars mathematically flatten 360 degrees of geographic space into a narrow horizontal line, calculating the relative angles of objective markers and sliding their icons left or right. It dramatically simplifies navigation by turning the world into a ruler.
