A closer look
The ancient Egyptians didn't mess around when it came to ceiling decor. Found in the Hathor temple complex, the Zodiac of Dendera is a massive, intricate bas-relief from around 50 BC. It perfectly synthesizes Babylonian, Greek, and Egyptian constellations into the first circular star map we've ever discovered. It was so historically breathtaking that an ambitious Frenchman simply sawed it out of the temple ceiling in 1821 and shipped it to the Louvre, proving colonialism and astrology go hand in hand.
