How your authenticator knows the right six digits
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
Your security app doesn't actually communicate with anything to give you those six digits. Time-based one-time passwords are generated independently on your device using a shared secret key and the current atomic time. Because both the server and your device know the secret and the exact second, they simultaneously arrive at the same temporary digits without exchanging a single signal.
