Caller ID spoofing manipulates network origin data

Because legacy phone networks fundamentally operate on the honor system, lying is shockingly simple. Caller ID data is transmitted alongside the call signal, but poorly secured routing protocols allow the origin party to completely manually define what number is broadcast. The receiving tower accepts this falsified data without verifying the true origin, immediately displaying a localized, fake number.
