The doctor who injected sheep thyroid into patients
Before Big Pharma had a pill for absolutely everything, George Redmayne Murray decided the best way to treat hypothyroidism was to juice a sheep’s thyroid and casually inject it into his patients. It sounds like literal witchcraft, but his 1891 foray into organotherapy actually worked, saving patients who were otherwise doomed to die from myxedema and laying the groundwork for modern endocrinology.
