For thousands of years, everyone blindly agreed that parallel lines would never ever intersect. Nikolai Lobachevsky decided this rule was boring and constructed an entirely new mathematical framework where space bends inward. He effectively threw conventional planar geometry into the trash just to see if the equations would still function.
