Doomsday clock measures proximity to global catastrophe

Instead of measuring anything useful, a group of highly anxious experts updates a symbolic clock every year to show how close humanity is to totally annihilating itself. Midnight represents total doom. We currently sit just seconds away. It is less of a scientific instrument and more of an annual guilt trip to remind us that we are collectively terrible at managing our own survival.
