When a Belly Rumble Became an Omen
Gastromancy was a form of divination that treated sounds or sensations from the stomach as signs to interpret. The word joins Greek roots associated with the belly and divination. Rather than dismissing a rumble as an ordinary bodily noise, a practitioner could regard it as a message from a supernatural source.
Turning an Uncertain Sound Into Meaning
A stomach can gurgle as muscles move food, liquid, and gas through the digestive tract. Those noises are ordinary and often have no special significance. Gastromancy gave them a different role: the sound became a prompt for interpretation, much as other divinatory practices found meaning in patterns or events.
The key was not that the rumble carried a verifiable message, but that people understood it within a system of belief. A sound that otherwise offered no clear explanation could be taken as guidance or a sign from beyond. The same unpredictable noise could therefore be heard either as digestion at work or as an omen.
