A closer look
Tashirojima is a tiny Japanese island where feral cats drastically outnumber the aging human population, resulting in a bizarre feline utopia where the animals are worshipped as symbols of good luck and absolute masters of the domain. Originally brought over to hunt mice that were threatening the local silkworm farms, the cats multiplied unchecked while the human youth fled to the mainland for actual career prospects, leaving behind a few dozen elderly residents to act as glorified can-openers. Now, thousands of crazy cat ladies and internet-poisoned tourists take long ferry rides just to wander the abandoned streets and get violently ignored by hundreds of stray animals. It is basically the purrfect post-apocalyptic scenario, proving that when human civilization inevitably crumbles into demographic irrelevance, our tiny, arrogant furry overlords will eagerly take over the real estate without a second thought
