Roddenberry knew studios only wanted cowboy shows, so he literally pitched 'Star Trek' as 'Wagon Train to the stars.' He promised gunfights and frontier exploration, but secretly sneaked in complex moral allegories, a diverse crew, and intense social commentary beneath a cheap veneer of laser battles and alien babes.
