While Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton get all the historical glory, Mabel Normand was the actual chaotic mastermind behind the Keystone comedy era. Not only did she perform her own bone-breaking stunts, but she frequently directed her male co-stars—including a rookie Chaplin—showing them exactly how to properly weaponize a pie to the face. History largely erased her critical role as an architect of physical comedy, probably because early Hollywood couldn't handle the fact that a tiny woman was the funniest asset they had.
