Most metals happily ignore weak acidic solutions, but highly concentrated nitric acid refuses to tolerate copper's existence. Dropping the pure solid metal into the liquid immediately triggers a furiously bubbling, highly toxic reaction. The acid aggressively eats the entire solid lattice, generating a horribly noxious cloud while leaving behind only heavily tainted sludge.
