A wooden seal hid a listening device for seven years
For seven years, the US Ambassador to the Soviet Union unknowingly kept a listening device directly above his desk. 'The Thing' was an espionage device hidden inside a carved wooden seal presented by Soviet schoolchildren. It possessed no batteries or power source, instead using a tiny membrane that only activated and transmitted audio when illuminated by a specific radio frequency from a nearby van.
