Usually, translating a Japanese cartoon is a serious linguistic endeavor meant to preserve cultural accuracy. But when ADV Films acquired a ghost-hunting anime that completely flopped overseas, they basically told the English voice cast to treat it like an unsupervised improv comedy session. The actors threw out the original script entirely and filled the episodes with fourth-wall breaks, deeply offensive jokes, and bizarre pop-culture references. They accidentally created a legendary comedy dub that is still heavily debated in the localization community today.
