A closer look
Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin created Crash Bandicoot for the original PlayStation, utilizing hacking techniques so unbelievably aggressive that it technically voided the warranty on the Sony development kits. The young programmers had to completely bypass the official software libraries, directly manipulating the console's memory and writing incredibly complex code just to squeeze every single ounce of processing power out of the machine. The game pushed so much dense graphical data through the disc drive that Sony engineers genuinely panicked, fearing that the constant intense laser movement would literally melt the plastic components and destroy the console. Their reckless coding completely revolutionized 3D platforming and gave Sony a massive flagship mascot capable of standing toe to toe with Mario and Sonic. It is deeply amusing that the defining technical achievement of the original PlayStation era was accomplished by two arrogant guys completely ignoring the official instruction manual and breaking all the rules!
