Because 'Willy the Wombat' sounds less like a radical 90s gaming mascot and more like a rejected Looney Tunes side character. Naughty Dog fully developed the game under that name, but the marketing department at Universal Interactive hated it. They demanded a punchier title that highlighted the game's core mechanic of smashing boxes. The devs eventually settled on 'Crash', saving the character from a lifetime of terrible alliteration.
