Konami developers added the famously terrifying thick fog to the original 1999 Silent Hill game entirely to mask the severe graphical limitations of the original PlayStation console. The hardware simply could not load the distant environments fast enough to keep up with the player, so the creators shrouded everything in a dense, eerie mist to prevent the buildings from visibly popping into existence on screen. What started as a desperate programming band-aid accidentally birthed a masterpiece of psychological horror and defined the atmosphere of an entire franchise. It is profoundly inspiring to realize that one of the most iconic aesthetic choices in gaming history was literally just developers hiding their inadequate technical specs behind a curtain of spooky weather. If only we could deploy a dense, impenetrable fog to mask our own glaring personal shortcomings every time we stepped out of the house
