The fan’s idea began as a costume change
Venom’s origin traces back to a reader’s proposal for a new Spider-Man costume. The fan, Randy Schueller, submitted the concept to Marvel; the company acquired the idea, and it became the starting point for a major change in Spider-Man’s look. The contribution was less a fully formed villain than a seed: a sleek black suit that could make the familiar hero seem newly strange.
How the suit became a character
In the comics, the black costume was later reimagined as a symbiote—an alien organism that bonds with a host and can influence its behavior. Spider-Man eventually rejects it, but the organism finds another host, Eddie Brock. Their shared anger toward Spider-Man turns the living suit into Venom, a character with the hero’s powers and a personal reason to oppose him.
That transformation took additional creative work by Marvel’s writers and artists; the fan did not submit Venom in his finished form. The lasting twist is that an idea for what Spider-Man would wear helped lead to an enemy who could wear the same powers—and make them feel threatening.
